GASKET - A seal or packing used between matched machine parts or around pipe joints to prevent the es-
cape of gas or fluid.
GOGGLES A device used to protect the eyes from dust, dirt, flying chips, etc.

HONING Sharpening or finishing with a finegrained whetstone, Honing is similar to lapping but differs in its
use of a whetstone rather than metal lap. (See LAPPING.)

IMPAIRMENT A state of diminished strength, value, or quality; poor health.
INITIAL The first or starting condition.
INTERMITTENT Stopping and starting at intervals.

LAPPING -The finishing of spindles, bored holes, etc., to fine limits by the use of a lap. A lap is a tool with a true
surface, usually of a metal softer than the workpiece material, and capable of holding the abrasive medium
used in the lapping process.

MALFUNCTION Occurs when a unit fails to operate normally.
MANUALLY By hand; employing human rather than mechanical energy.
MANUFACTURER The company which makes an item or piece of equipment for sale.

OBSTRUCTION An obstacle.

PINCH POINT A spot or place where moving equipment may come into close contact with another object
and trap, crush, or pinch anything in its way. Personnel should stand clear of possible pinch points prior to
startup of equipment.
PIVOT A short rod or shaft about which a related part rotates; the act of turning on or as if on a pivot.
PRIME The act of introducing a liquid into a pump to increase the pumps ability to overcome negative head
pressure.
PRIME MOVER Major motive force. A gasoline engine is the prime mover for the heater

RECOMMENDATIONS Suggestions for change; advice given usually to make an improvement.
