INTRODUCTIONB-1.GENERALa.This section provides a general explanation of all maintenance and repair functions authorized at variousmaintenance levels.b.The Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC) in Section II designates overall responsibility for the performance ofmaintenance functions on the identified end item or component. The implementation of the maintenance functions uponthe end item or component will be consistent with the assigned maintenance functions.c.Section III contains supplemental instructions on explanatory notes for a particular maintenance function.B-2. MAINTENANCE FUNCTIONSa.Inspect.To determine the serviceability of an item by comparing its physical, mechanical, and/or electricalcharacteristics with established standards through examination.b.TIS. To verify serviceability and detect incipient failure by measuring the mechanical or electrical characteristicsof an item and comparing those characteristics with prescribed standards.c.Service. Operations required periodically to keep an item in proper operating condition, i.e., to dean (includesdecontamination, when required), to preserve, to drain, to paint, or to replenish fuel, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, orcompressed air supplies.d.Adjust.To maintain or regulate, within prescribed limits, by bringing into proper or exact position, or by settingthe operating characteristics to specified parameters.e.Align.To adjust specified variable elements of an item to bring about optimum or desired performance.f.Calibrate.To compare an instrument (measurement standard or item of test, measurement and diagnosticequipment) of unverified accuracy with an instrument of known and greater accuracy to detect and correct anydiscrepancy in the accuracy of the unverified instrument.g.Install.The act of emplacing, seating, or fixing into position an item, part, or module (component or assembly) ina manner to allow the proper functioning of an equipment.B-1
