8. Exhaust valve
Tappet clearance is achieved by grinding ends of
removal and
valve stems. To remove and replace exhaust valve
installation
(1), follow steps 3 and 5 above.

Intake valve
To remove intake valve (3), slip upper jaw of com-
removal
presser over top of valve chamber (8) and lower
jaw between spring (14) and retainer (15). Compress
spring, remove retainer, pull out valve, and remove
compressor.
NOTE
Apply antiseize compound (Appendix E, Item 1) to valve stems and guides
before installing. Be sure no compound is on ends of valve stems or tappets.
10. Intake valve
To install intake valve (3), compress retainer (15)
installation
and spring (14) with compressor, Insert com-
pressed spring and retainer in valve chamber (8).
Drop valve stem through larger area of retainer
slot and move compressor in order to center the
small area of retainer (15) slot onto shoulder on
stem of intake valve. Release tension on spring
and remove compressor.
NOTE
If engine is to be reassembled at this
time, replace cylinder head as
described in paragraph 5-10,
breather as described in
paragraph 436, preheater box
as described in paragraph 426,
and muffler as described in
paragraph 4-25.
